Remote Learning

Thank you for the surprisingly smooth transition from packets to Google Classroom.  I hope that you are enjoying the new platform and it's helping to better keep your student organized.
I appreciate your patience and care as we continue to social distance and learn remotely.  I know each family, teachers included, has their own set of challenges at this time and by working together and showing grace we can finish the school year strong for our little scholars.
Moving forward, whether you choose to request packets, print worksheets, use your own paper, or are getting creative with drawing on the screen, your child's work should be uploaded into its corresponding Assignment tab on Google Classroom.  We will use this method of submitting work for the remainder of the school year.

As always, reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  We are available to help or connect you to additional resources.

Once logged in you can choose what to do from your dashboard.  My Assignment includes the books your child as been assigned for the week.  Remember, just like in the physical, nightly reading bag each book should be read twice.

Those reading at level F or above will not have the option to listen to the story.
Those reading below level F can choose to listen to the story, but it should be silenced one day for independent practice.

If time permits, you can do extended reading, however, some of these books may be assigned in the future.  To do so, back at your dashboard, you can select Reading Room.  Here, there is a large collection of books that are AT your child's reading level and two levels up and down, giving them a wide variety of books to choose from.

There is another tab called Flight Check.  This can be used only when your child feels ready to move up to the next level.  It won't always be available if your child has just began a level or has recently used it.  Students should do a "cold reading" meaning it's their first attempt and complete it free from parent assistance.  It can be hard not to give your child a word, but instead encourage them to sound it out and move on if they must.  After I listen, if they read with 95% accuracy, I will move them to the next level.

Epic! is another source for fiction and nonfiction books that is free for the remainder of the school year.  These are high quality resource books and many have an audio option that will read to your child.  There are also lots of silly books we've read in class and could serve as a fun way to break up the day.

Spalding Videos & Finger Gym Resources

During the upcoming summer months it will be beneficial to your child to make a return to some handwriting basics. The link provided offers Great Hearts' videos that include both correct letter formation and sounds of all our 70 phonograms. Challenge your child to follow along.
*Proper handwriting is essential and allows for ease into cursive.

Use videos as often as you'd like but please be sure to review before the start of the new school year.

Remember to keep those hands strong by utilizing some Finger Gym activities provided below or create your own strengthening exercises.

Here are fun ways to build fine motor skills.
1. Draw and color pictures (using broken crayons promotes better grip): create a comic or book, copy characters from a book, magazine or favorite show
2. Build with small Legos
3. Cut and create crafts with art supplies (you can even use the fun blade scissors)
4. Tear art- tearing different colored paper and gluing to create a design
5. Practice correct letter formation by writing in salt, sugar, whipped cream or shaving cream on a cookie sheet
6. Single hand hole punch
7. Use tweezers/tongs/clothespins to pick up or move small objects out of egg carton.
8. Use bread dough, pizza dough, etc., to squeeze with index finger and thumb to hunt for dried pieces of pasta hidden inside
9. Place coins, beads, Legos into play dough to pull out
10. Roll, cut, squeeze, design with play dough or putty
11. Place washcloth or hand towel under water, have your child wring out the water
12. Use water bottle to squirt out water on cement/sidewalk.  Have them squirt to make shapes and letters.
